Wooden Outdoor Side Table: Atmosphere & Convenience with Douglas Wood
Everything about the perfect wooden side table: atmosphere, convenience and quality for your garden
You are sitting comfortably in the garden. The first rays of spring sunshine are breaking through, or perhaps you are enjoying a warm summer evening. You have a good book in your hands, a magazine, or you are simply enjoying the company of friends and family. The atmosphere is perfect — but one crucial thing is missing: a convenient, stable place to put your drink, sunglasses, phone or that bowl of snacks, without having to get up from your comfortable chair. This is exactly where a wooden side table comes into its own. It is often the most underrated hero of outdoor furniture. Modest in size, but big in impact, and indispensable for real outdoor living.
At bankentafel2in1.nl, we understand better than anyone that outdoor furniture should not only be pleasing to the eye, but above all practical, tough and durable. Our roots lie in designing smart, space-saving solutions such as our iconic bench–table combinations. That same passion for clever wood construction and craftsmanship is reflected in our collection of sturdy side tables. Where our well-known 2-in-1 benches provide flexible seating and dining, our wooden side table delivers the essential convenience right next to your bench, chair or sun lounger. No wobbly constructions made from thin slats or complicated construction kits where you always seem to be missing screws — just solid, no-nonsense Dutch quality that is ready to use straight away.
In this article, we take you into the world of high-quality garden wood. We explain why one table is not the same as another, why we swear by Douglas wood, and how you can enjoy decades of use from your purchase with minimal maintenance.
What can I use a wooden side table for?
The strength of a good wooden side table lies in its remarkable versatility. It is a true chameleon in your outdoor space. While a large dining table or picnic table has a fixed place, the side table is the flexible element in your garden layout. Our customers use them in ways that range from purely functional to atmosphere-enhancing. Consider the following practical applications:
- The classic ‘butler’: Next to a lounge set, garden chair or sun lounger — this is the most common use. Your coffee, glass of white wine or snacks are always safe and within reach. No more placing your glass in the grass and risking it tipping over.
- Flexible workspace: More and more of us are working from home — and increasingly outdoors. A sturdy side table offers just enough space for a laptop and mouse, or for a notebook during a phone call in the sun.
- Plant table or display platform: Create depth and height variation in your garden or on your balcony by using the table as a platform. Place a solid pot with flowering plants on it, a lantern for the evening, or a decorative garden ornament. Playing with different heights makes your garden or balcony appear visually larger.
- Play space for children: A robust little table is the perfect personal spot for children. They can draw or play with toy cars without you having to worry about the furniture tipping over or getting damaged. Our tables can take a knock — ideal for children’s parties.
- The BBQ assistant: Do you enjoy standing behind the grill? Then you always seem to run out of hands. A wooden side table next to the barbecue is the perfect place for tongs, spices and marinades — hygienic and practical.
- Hospitality and commercial terraces: For hospitality businesses, a sturdy side table is indispensable between the chairs on a terrace. It offers guests comfort and space, directly enhancing their experience and spending. A wobbly table is one of the biggest irritations on a terrace — our heavy-duty quality prevents that.
Whether you have a compact city-centre balcony where every centimetre counts, or a spacious garden in a rural setting, there is always a logical place for this functional addition. It connects the different zones of your garden seamlessly.
Why choose a Douglas wood side table?
Wood is a natural product, but not every type of wood is suitable for the unpredictable Dutch climate, with its frequent rain, intense sunshine and periods of frost. At bankentafel2in1.nl, we deliberately and exclusively choose Douglas wood. Why? Because it offers the perfect balance between durability, aesthetics and value for money.
Douglas wood comes from the Douglas fir and is one of the hardest European softwood species. It falls into durability class 3–4. To put this into perspective: untreated spruce or scaffold wood often falls into class 5 (the least durable) and will quickly deteriorate outdoors without heavy chemical treatment. Untreated Douglas wood lasts on average around 10 to 15 years, provided it is not permanently standing in groundwater.
The unique advantages of Douglas wood at a glance:
- Natural protection: Douglas wood is naturally rich in resin. Over time, these resins harden and form a natural barrier against fungi and wood rot. This means the wood does not need to be chemically impregnated, which is better for the environment.
- Strength and stability: The wood structure is coarse and the grain is straight, resulting in very strong beams that are far less prone to warping than softer wood types. This is essential for a wooden side table that needs to remain flat and stable.
- Warm appearance: Fresh Douglas wood has a beautiful, warm colour ranging from yellow-red to pinkish tones. It instantly adds atmosphere and warmth to your terrace, unlike the often cold, greenish hue of impregnated garden wood.
- Attractive ageing: Over time, exposure to UV light and rain will cause the wood to weather into a beautiful silver-grey. This is a natural process that does not affect the quality, but gives the furniture a robust, rural and timeless appearance. Choosing a Douglas wood side table means choosing a piece of furniture that truly ‘lives’.
Compared to hardwood, Douglas is a much more sustainable choice in terms of transport (it comes from Europe rather than the tropics) and is also much kinder to your budget, while still offering an impressively long lifespan.
Quality is in the details: why no visible screw holes?
If you search online for a “wooden side table”, you will find countless suppliers — from large DIY stores to budget retailers. So what really sets a wooden side table from bankentafel2in1.nl apart? The secret lies in our own workshop and our specific construction method. We are not fans of visible screws in the tabletop, and there is a very practical reason for that.
The problem with top-mounted screws
Many manufacturers simply screw the planks onto the frame from above. This is quick and cheap. The downside is that small recesses (the screw holes) remain on the surface of the tabletop. Rainwater collects in these recesses. Because the protective surface of the wood is broken here, water can penetrate deep into the grain — exactly where wood rot begins. It also looks untidy and less refined.
Our solution: concealed assembly
Our tables are constructed so that the tabletop is completely smooth and free of visible screw holes. Everything is assembled ‘blind’, from underneath. This requires more craftsmanship and time in our workshop, but the result speaks for itself:
- Longer lifespan: Water runs straight off the table; there are no weak points where moisture can accumulate.
- Clean design: You see a beautiful, even wooden surface without distracting metal screw heads.
- Safety: No splinters around screw holes or sharp edges where children could hurt themselves.
- Hygiene: Dirt and food residue cannot collect in screw holes, making cleaning much easier.
This is quality you can both see and feel. Where many competitors opt for the quick route of visible fixings and mass production, we choose craftsmanship and long-term durability.
The convenience of fully assembled delivery: we do the work
We all know the scenario: you order a beautiful piece of furniture, but on delivery you receive a flat box with a hundred screws, wooden dowels and an unclear manual with vague drawings. Before you can enjoy it, two hours have passed, frustration has set in, and you have had an argument because “part B” apparently does not fit into “part C”. At bankentafel2in1.nl, we simply do not do that. We believe in complete peace of mind.
Why buy a fully assembled wooden side table?
Your wooden side table is delivered fully assembled as standard. We do not see this as an extra service, but as the norm. This offers clear advantages:
- Instant enjoyment (plug & play): The driver delivers the table. You remove any packaging, place it in the desired spot in the garden or on the balcony, and you are done. Time to pour that drink.
- Guaranteed structural strength: Assembly is carried out in our own workshop by experienced craftsmen, using professional tools and the correct fixings. This guarantees a solid construction — no wobbly legs because one bolt was not tightened enough at home. Our tables are rock solid.
- No tools required: No drill, screwdriver or Allen key needed — and no borrowing from the neighbours.
- Time-saving: Your free time is valuable. Spend it relaxing in the garden instead of sweating in the garage with a construction kit.
This clearly sets us apart from many DIY stores, where the low price often comes at the expense of your own time and effort.
Comparison: bankentafel2in1.nl vs. the rest
It can be difficult to compare products online. Photos can be misleading. To help you make an informed choice, we have summarised the key differences between our approach and that of many DIY stores or online box-shifters.
Feature | Our Wooden Side Table | Standard Flat-Pack (Competitors) |
Assembly | Fully assembled (ready to use) | Self-assembly (often complex and time-consuming) |
Wood type | Solid Douglas wood (durability class 3–4) | Often thin spruce or scaffold wood (class 5) |
Tabletop finish | No visible screw holes (concealed assembly) | Screws visible in the tabletop (moisture traps) |
Stability & weight | Very stable, heavy and wind-resistant | Often lightweight and prone to blowing over |
Origin | Own workshop in the Netherlands | Often mass-produced in Eastern Europe or Asia |
Lifespan | Many years (10–15 years untreated) | Limited (rots quickly without annual treatment) |
As you can see, we invest in the essentials: good wood and good construction. The result is a product that may be slightly heavier, but lasts much longer and is far better suited to the Dutch climate.
How do I best maintain Douglas wood?
A frequently asked question in our showroom and by email is how much maintenance is required. Many people fear becoming a slave to their garden furniture. The honest and reassuring answer: as much or as little as you want. Douglas wood is naturally strong, and with the right care it stays beautiful even longer.
1. Cleaning (the basics)
Clean your wooden side table regularly to prevent algae, bird droppings and dirt from penetrating the wood — especially in autumn and winter.
How? Simply use warm water, a dash of green soap and a soft brush or sponge. Always brush along the grain.
Important: Never use a pressure washer. The powerful jet damages the wood fibres, leaving the surface rough like sandpaper and causing it to attract dirt and moisture much faster. This is the quickest way to ruin your table.
2. Treatment (oil or stain)
Here you have a choice. Do you want to retain the warm orange-pink colour of new Douglas wood? Then we recommend treating the wood shortly after purchase (or once it is dry) with a natural Douglas oil with UV protection. Repeat this annually or every two years.
If you choose not to treat it, that is absolutely fine. After about a year, the wood will weather evenly to a silver-grey colour. This process, known as weathering, is the wood’s natural protection. It does not affect durability or strength — only appearance. Many people actually love this weathered look for its robust, authentic character.
3. Moisture management
Wood needs to be able to ‘breathe’. Make sure the side table is not standing permanently in a puddle of water. Our tables are designed with solid legs, but you can place rubber tiles under the legs if the table is positioned on very wet grass.
Winter tip:
Although the wood is tough, storing the table under cover during winter (for example in a shed or under a veranda) significantly extends its lifespan. No space? Leave it outdoors, but ensure it is raised and free from rising damp. We often advise against covering it with a standard tarpaulin, unless it is a breathable cover. Sealed tarpaulins cause condensation, which creates the perfect breeding ground for mould. The rule of thumb: better wet in the wind than damp under a cover.
Where can I find a high-quality wooden side table?
Finding the right side table starts with defining your expectations. Are you looking for something that is “good enough” for one season, or a durable investment you will not have to think about again for years? If you choose quality, craftsmanship, local production and service, you are in the right place at bankentafel2in1.nl.
We are not an anonymous box-mover or a giant warehouse. We are makers. In our own workshop, we control every plank we cut and every joint we create. We carefully select our Douglas wood for quality and appearance. Whether you are a private customer looking for a stylish wooden side table for your balcony, or a school searching for tough, vandal-resistant furniture for the playground — our Douglas tables are designed for intensive use.
We supply a wide range of customers:
- Private customers: for back gardens, roof terraces and balconies.
- Hospitality: terraces that need tables which will not blow over and keep glasses stable.
- Care institutions and schools: where safety (no splinters, no sharp protruding screws) and durability are essential.
Frequently asked questions about our side tables
Still unsure or have specific questions? Below we answer the most common questions we receive.
- Is a wooden side table heavy to move?
Our tables are made from solid Douglas wood, making them significantly heavier than plastic tables or models made from thin spruce. This weight is a major advantage in windy conditions — they do not blow away during autumn storms. At the same time, they are compact enough to be easily moved by one adult if the sun shifts or you need the table elsewhere.
- Can the side table stay outside all year round?
Yes, absolutely. Douglas wood is resistant to a wide range of weather conditions, from frost to heat. For optimal condition, we do recommend regularly removing leaves and dirt from the tabletop so the wood can breathe and dry properly after rainfall. A clean table lasts longer.
- Is the table really delivered ready to use?
Yes. No hassle with Allen keys or confusing manuals. Our drivers deliver the table fully assembled. All you need to do is decide where it should stand.
- Do you offer other sizes or custom work?
Our standard wooden side table is designed with ideal dimensions for most applications — not too big, not too small. Because we have our own workshop, we can sometimes make adjustments for larger orders (for example for hospitality use). Feel free to contact us to discuss the possibilities.
- Will the colour match my other garden furniture?
Douglas wood has a neutral, warm appearance that is easy to combine. It looks great alongside our own folding picnic tables, but also pairs beautifully with grey lounge sets, black metal chairs or other wooden furniture. As it naturally weathers, it blends effortlessly into any garden style, from modern to classic.
