Ready for summer? Find your ideal new picnic table with us
The outdoor season starts with a new picnic table
The birds are singing again, crocuses are emerging from the ground, and the first rays of sunshine invite you to throw open the garden doors. This is the perfect time to prepare your garden, terrace or balcony for long evenings and enjoyable moments outdoors. Are you looking for a new picnic table? Then you have come to the right place. Choosing garden furniture is often the first step towards a summer full of outdoor enjoyment. Whether you are looking for a robust, fixed model for a spacious lawn or a smart, space-saving solution for a balcony, we make it possible.
At bankentafel2in1.nl, we understand that a garden table is more than just a stack of wood and a handful of screws. It is the social heart of your outdoor space. It is the place where you enjoy a quiet morning newspaper with a fresh cup of coffee, where children spend the afternoon colouring, and where you share drinks with friends in the evening until the sun goes down. Because we believe that quality and ease of use should go hand in hand, we produce high-quality furniture from Douglas wood in our own workshop. A key distinguishing advantage: we deliver fully assembled. No hassle with unclear instructions, missing screws or wobbly legs — just immediate enjoyment from the moment we drive away.
Why choose a Douglas wood picnic table?
During your online search for a new picnic table, you have probably come across the term “Douglas wood” many times. But why is this particular type of wood so exceptionally popular for outdoor furniture in the Netherlands and Belgium? We are happy to explain, so you know exactly what you are buying and why this is a sustainable choice.
Douglas wood comes from the Douglas fir and is known as one of the hardest softwood species in Europe. The wood naturally has a high level of durability, classified as durability class 3. In practice, this means that the heartwood can easily last 10 to 15 years without treatment. The strength of this wood lies in its natural composition: it contains a high amount of resin, which protects the wood from the inside out. As the wood dries, it also becomes increasingly harder.
Another major advantage is its aesthetic value. New Douglas wood has a warm, pinkish to orange hue that looks beautiful and natural in a green garden. It truly has character. Over time, due to UV radiation and weather conditions, the wood will gradually develop a natural silvery-grey patina. This does not affect the quality, but gives the table a robust, rustic appearance. Would you prefer to retain the original colour? That can easily be achieved with an oil or stain, which we will discuss later.
Craftsmanship from our own workshop: attention to detail
In a market flooded with mass-produced furniture from the Far East, we consciously choose local craftsmanship. All our tables are made in our own workshop in the Netherlands. This not only gives us control over the quality of every plank we saw, but also allows us to apply unique production techniques that extend the lifespan of your furniture.
A perfect example is our assembly technique. What makes our tables extra special compared to many alternatives from DIY stores is that there are no visible screw holes on the top of the tabletop. We fasten our tabletops “blind” from underneath. This has two major advantages:
- Aesthetics: The result is a much cleaner and more luxurious appearance. You are not looking at dozens of screw heads that may rust or discolour over time.
- Durability: From a technical point of view, this is the most important benefit. In a screw hole drilled from above, water always remains after rainfall. Water that penetrates the wood is the number one cause of wood rot in the long term. By using blind assembly, rainwater can run off the surface easily without soaking into the wood.
Innovation in the garden: the Bench and Table 2 in 1
Not everyone has the luxury of a castle-sized garden with unlimited space. Especially in urban areas, on balconies, roof terraces or in more compact city gardens, every square metre counts. You do not want your entire outdoor space to be taken up by a single large piece of furniture that you may not use every day. This is where we offer the perfect solution: the Bench and Table 2 in 1.
The concept is as simple as it is brilliant. Imagine this: you want to sit in the sun with a good book or a cup of coffee. You use the furniture as a comfortable garden bench with a supportive backrest. The seat is deep enough for relaxed seating. Do guests arrive, does the barbecue get going, or would you like to work outside with your laptop? Then you simply fold the backrest over — literally in two seconds — transforming it into a tabletop and creating a spacious picnic table where the whole family can dine together.
The benefits of this 2-in-1 system:
- Space-saving: When folded, the furniture takes up half the space of a fixed table. You can easily place the bench against a wall or balcony railing.
- Flexibility: You decide whether you need a lounge area (bench) or a dining area (table) at any given moment.
- Safety: The mechanism is strong and stable. It is easy to operate without being heavy or dangerous.
- Freedom of choice: Available in various sizes, from model XXS (ideal for 1–2 people on a small balcony) to XL (suitable for 3–6 people per bench).
Fixed model or foldable: which suits you best?
Are you unsure whether to choose a traditional fixed picnic table or one of our foldable variants? Both options have their own strengths and charm. It is important to consider your household size, the available space and how you plan to use the table. To help you choose your new picnic table, we have outlined the key differences and considerations below.
Feature | Fixed Picnic Table (Robust) | Foldable / 2-in-1 Model (Flexible) |
|---|---|---|
Primary use | Ideal for large gardens, public spaces, hospitality terraces and school playgrounds where the table has a permanent place and is always ready for use. | Perfect for balconies, roof terraces, front gardens and smaller back gardens where space needs to be multifunctional. |
Stability & weight | Extremely robust and heavy-duty. These tables stand firm and will not easily be blown over. Often described as “vandal-proof”. | Surprisingly stable thanks to smart design, but lighter in weight and therefore easier to move if you want to follow the sun in your garden. |
Storage & winter | Usually remains in place during winter. Due to its weight, it is not easily moved. Douglas wood is well suited to this. | Easy to fold and store in a shed, garage or storage space if you want to use the space differently in winter. |
Appearance | Classic, rustic and solid. A real statement piece in the garden. | Modern, innovative and lighter in appearance. Less bulky in a smaller space. |
For businesses and hospitality, we often recommend the fixed models due to their extreme sturdiness and lower risk of theft because of their weight. Private customers, on the other hand, increasingly choose the flexibility of the 2-in-1 models, especially now that gardens in new residential developments are often more compact.
Where can I find new picnic table models?
The garden furniture market never stands still — and neither do we. You do not need to leave home to spot the latest trends; on our website you will find our complete and up-to-date range. We regularly refresh our collection based on customer feedback.
A recent addition to our range, which has been in high demand, is models with a solid tabletop. Standard picnic tables often have gaps between the planks for water drainage. With our new solid-top models (available in beam or plank design), the planks are placed closer together, with just a few millimetres of spacing to allow for natural wood movement. This not only creates a more luxurious appearance, but is also highly practical. Nothing falls through the gaps anymore — very convenient when children are colouring outside, when working with beads, or simply to prevent cutlery from falling onto the ground. Of course, we have also carefully considered water drainage by processing the wood in the correct way.
In addition, we offer dedicated children’s picnic tables. These are not flimsy plastic tables, but robust wooden tables made from the same high-quality Douglas wood as our larger models, scaled perfectly for little ones. A fantastic place for their own tea parties or craft afternoons.
Advice: which picnic table for a small garden?
A frequently asked question in our customer service department: “I have a small city garden — will this fit?” Measuring is knowing. For small gardens or balconies, we almost always recommend Model S or Model M from our 2-in-1 series. But what should you pay attention to exactly?
When measuring your space, consider not only the dimensions of the table itself, but also the “access space”. You want to be able to sit down comfortably without having to twist and turn. We use the following guidelines:
- Table depth: An unfolded 2-in-1 set is often approximately 130 to 150 cm deep, depending on the model.
- Walking space: Allow at least 60 to 70 cm of free space around the table so you can slide the bench back or walk past easily.
- Balcony tip: Do you have a narrow balcony? Place one 2-in-1 bench against the railing or wall. Use it as a bench for relaxing, and unfold it into a table when you want to dine outdoors with your partner.
Maintenance and treatment: keeping your table looking beautiful
As mentioned, Douglas wood is naturally very durable. Nevertheless, we often receive questions about maintenance. Do you need to get started straight away with brushes and tins of paint? No, you do not. You can safely leave your new picnic table untreated outdoors. The wood protects itself through the resins that harden naturally.
However, wood is a natural product. Under the influence of sun and rain, the surface will gradually turn grey. Many people love this look, but if you want to maintain the warm, fresh wood appearance, action is required. In that case, we recommend treating the wood with a special Douglas oil, preferably when the table is completely dry. The oil nourishes the wood, repels water and often contains a UV filter that slows down greying.
Cleaning is simple: in autumn and spring, use a bucket of lukewarm water and a stiff brush. Regularly remove sand and leaves so that moisture does not remain on the wood unnecessarily. Do not use a pressure washer; this opens up the wood fibres, making the table rougher and more prone to dirt.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Through contact with our customers, we often encounter the same practical questions. To inform you as clearly as possible, we have collected and answered the most frequently asked questions below.
1. Do I need to assemble the picnic table myself?
No, absolutely not. This is one of our key distinguishing features. While DIY stores often deliver a bundle of loose planks and a bag of screws to your driveway (the notorious “IKEA package” effect), we deliver fully assembled. Our driver delivers the table ready to use. You do not need to drill, screw or puzzle anything together — the table is ready for immediate use.
2. Is the table delivered into the garden?
Our driver will help place the picnic table in the desired location. Do you live on an upper floor without a lift, or does the table need to pass through a narrow hallway? Please let us know in advance so we can think along with you. The 2-in-1 benches are easier to lift and manoeuvre than the heavy fixed models. Everything is discussed with you in advance by our planning team.
3. Can the table stay outside during winter?
Yes, that is no problem at all. Douglas wood is resistant to frost and rain. However, it can help extend the lifespan by raising the table slightly off the ground during winter (for example on paving slabs or rubber feet), so the legs are not left standing in water. We recommend not covering the picnic table with a cover. Moisture can become trapped underneath and contribute to mould formation. Douglas wood copes perfectly well with our climate — better wet in the wind than suffocating under a cover.
4. Does the wood continue to change after delivery?
Wood is a living material that responds to temperature differences and moisture. Small cracks may appear in summer, or planks may shrink slightly. In wetter seasons, they expand again. This is a natural process and does not affect the structural strength of your new picnic table. On the contrary, it adds to its robust charm.
